Earlier, Bandhavgarh was private hunting preserve of Royal family of Rewa. Baghel Rajputs rulled Bandhavgarh forest area since 12th century. It was declared National Park in year 1968 and later included in Project Tiger and become Tiger Reserve. Its name Bandhavgarh is derived from hill-top garrision inside park area. Bandhavgarh literally is a combination of two words, "Bandhav" means Brother and "Garh" means fort. Their is special safari for fort in which jeep goes at top of the hill (811 meters) to do sightseeing of Bandhavgarh fort, Bandhavdheesh Temple, man made rock-cut ponds used by royal family, statues, caves and other historical monuments. Fort was centre of traders traveling from Kaushambi (today's Allahabad region)& Bharhut (today's Satna area)Prominent mammal species found in Bandhavgarh are Tiger, Leopard, Nilgai, Asiatic Wild Dog (Dhole), Spotted Deer, Antilopes, Wild Boar, Sloth Bear etc. Their are about 250 bird species in Bandhavgarh among which Indian Roller, Magpie, Green Bee-eater, Racket tailed Drango, Rose-ringed Parakeet, Lapwings, Kingfishers, King Vultures, Shikra, Lesser Adjutant etc can be seen easily in the forest. At each safari, one can visit in any of the one zone, allotted by Forest Department. Among them, route system is applied in Tala Zone due to safari jeep crowd and to avoid concentration of safari jeeps in one region in search of Tiger.
